Fighting Poverty, Policy, and Bio-social Causes of Girls' School dropout in Malawi
Help Us Support Girls' Education
Despite diverse efforts by organizations and the government to actively promote girls rights and free education opportunities in villages and townships in Malawi, the number of girls who drop out of primary and secondary school continues to rise every year.
LoFom Foundation is a community of highly collaborative, intercultural, and supportive thinkers who are passionately fighting drivers of poor class performance, absenteeism, and school drop-out in girls. We identify:
(1) Inadequate menstrual care
(2) Poverty, and;
(3) Unfavourable local school policies
We are actively challenging discourse and narratives that normalize low class attendance, early pregnancy, and academic failure in girls.
Their shared experiences on menstruation and learning inform the direction of our projects. (A baseline assessment at Misesa Primary school, in Blantyre, Malawi )
TUITION SUPPORT
We have collaborated with communities and teachers to help us identify at risk girls and support them to stay in school. Currently, 21 girls are benefiting from this initiative.
MENSTRUAL CARE
From 3 to 7 days every month (85 days every year), menstruating girls are forced to “shy away” from the classroom. This initiative seeks to debug common misconceptions, norms, and myths about menstruation through health education, while leading local schools in building Dedicated changing Rooms
ADVOCACY
& TRAINING
We thrive to engage parents and teachers (PTA) to support reforms of local policies to ensure that at-risk girls or those who already dropped-out are reregistered and supported
